The Morehead City Fire Department is on the scene of a major gas leak at the Crystal Coast Plaza that includes stores like Petsmart, TjMaxx and West Marine. All businesses are being evacuated.

12:57 UPDATE: All lanes are open and the roadway is clear after a crash closed the west bound lane of Highway 24 near Gull Harbor.

City Hall is closed to foot traffic today as we settle into the new building located at 1100 Bridges St., but our employees are answering phones and emails. We will be fully open for business starting tomorrow (Tuesday, August 10th) at 9:00 a.m.

**UPDATE: Stand-off over following self-inflicted gun-shot wound
A three-hour stand-off has ended after the suspect exited a vehicle and turned his gun on himself. Richard Kelly Murphrey, 35, of Gloucester, NC is in serious condition and has been transported to Carteret Health Care.
Highway 24 is now back open.
