Account Policies

The Morehead Water and Sewer Department provides water and sewer utility services to approximately 5,900 customers. The minimum water and sewer bill is currently $38.79 per month for the first 2,000 gallons of water. Rates for consumption after the minimum of 2,000 gallons is provided on this page.

The drinking water is tested each day for quality and meets all state and federal requirements. Basic Information on a 3/4-inch meter, for larger meters, please contact the Public Utilities Department at 252-726-6848 for rates.

Removal of Groundwater Infiltration on Customer's Property

Property owners will be notified when the amount of the infiltration from their sewer service exceeds good engineering practice (1 gal/hr/100 ft of pipe) and will be given a Notice of Violation of Town Ordinances with a 90 day time period to take action. Customers who do not make a timely effort to correct the problem will be subject to enforcement actions which include a $50 per day fine.

  • The Town will participate with the cost of the pipe replacement that removes infiltration of groundwater as verified by the Water Department by paying the owner $2 per lineal foot for the sewer pipe with a limit of $200 per property parcel for pipe replacement within the property parcel.
  • The property owner must obtain a Building Inspection Permit and have the quantity of line to be replaced verified by the Water Department. Payment to the property owner by the Town shall be made upon verification of the work performed to remove the infiltration of groundwater.

Water Conservation Incentive Rate Structure

Policy adopted by Resolution 1999-35, September 14, 1999.

Water Conservation Incentive Rate Structure includes the replacement of existing standard faucets, showerheads, and toilets with low flow faucets, showerheads and toilets. All new homes and commercial establishments must install low flow faucets, showerhead and toilets.

No standard faucets, showerheads and toilets are allowed in new homes or new commercial establishments.

Credits

Credits are to be applied against water and/or sewer bills for the replacement of standard faucets, showerheads and toilets with low flow faucets, showerheads and toilets as follows:

Credit shall apply to utility bills after evidence satisfactory to the Town has been provided and the Town's representative has inspected the replacement fixture(s).
